Frequently Asked Questions

What are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges are nothing but the gap created by one or more missing teeth. The process replaces the missing teeth in your mouth. Dental bridges are custom made according to the patient and are shaped to resemble their natural teeth. A dental bridge is flocked by two or more anchoring teeth known as abutment teeth and false teeth or tooth between them known as pontics. At Healthy Smiles, we offer pontics in different materials such as porcelain, gold, alloy, and zirconia. Some pontics are available in a combination of these materials mentioned. Dental bridges can restore back your smile and give you a set of fully functional teeth that look completely natural.

Usually there are 4 main types of dental bridges available and they are as below:

The first is the Conventional Bridge which is suitable for patients who have natural teeth present on either side of the gap created by the missing tooth. The process requires reshaping of teeth on both the sides of the gap so space can be created to cement crowns on them using a pontic in between them, so it can take the place of the missing tooth.

The second is a Cantilever Bridge and it is appropriate to implement on a person who has an adjacent tooth on just one side of the lost tooth/teeth. The pontic in this case is sustained by a single side by one or two crowned abutments. This is subject to the support needed by the pontic or the length of the bridge.

The third type of dental bridge is a resin-bonded bridge known as Maryland Bridge. It is a more conservative substitute to traditional dental bridges. They comprise a single pontic which is supported in place by a porcelain or metal framework known as a wing. Composite resin cement is used to bond the framework behind the tooth adjacent to the missing tooth. Usually, some amount of tooth may have to be removed from the back surfaces of the teeth to make some space for the framework to fit.

The fourth and the most suitable forms of tooth replacement are Implant-Supported bridges. Biocompatible titanium implants are surgically embedded in the jawbone to secure the restoration. One dental implant replaces one missing tooth. Alternatively, a pontic is placed between two implant-supported crowns. The procedure is both invasive and expensive and requires more time than the other treatments offered, but the results are truly amazing. Moreover, this option is considered to be a one-time investment as these implants would last you for a lifetime.

Dental implants are made of a biocompatible material as these types of materials are accepted by the body. Titanium is a strong metal and gives the replaced teeth a strong foundation. They are long-lasting and have a high success rate.

Another material that is commonly used instead of titanium is zirconia.

The crowns attached to the implants are usually made of all-ceramic or high-grade porcelain fused to expensive metals such as gold.

The dentist, oral surgeons or prosthodontists advise you about the options in dental implants that would best suit your condition. Our doctors are very gentle in handling the patients and try to save the damaged tooth but for cases where the tooth cannot be saved, they advise an extraction and an implant.

Some aspects that are checked for in a patient who requires a dental implant include good oral hygiene, fulfilling some common medical requirements and having good bone quality along with proper volume. However, if the patient doesn’t meet the latter requirement a bone grafting can help solve this problem.

Besides giving your face a pleasing look, dental implants also offer functional benefits of chewing food, providing support to the gums, etc. When you lose a tooth, it doesn’t just leave a gap in your jaw but also impacts the other teeth. The remaining teeth tend to shift to the space of lost tooth, causing your cheeks and lips to sink. It also causes discomfort, problems to chew food, and speech issues.

A dental implant is fixed on the bone and is independent from the other teeth. So, if the dental implant has problems, then the implant will alone be affected by the issue and the other teeth will remain safe. Our specialists are amazing at assessing problematic areas. Once they examine the issue, they take the necessary steps to fix the problem without affecting the other teeth. Earlier the only solution for patients, who had several teeth missing from their jaw, was dentures. However, dental science has advanced over the years and the materials and tools available to execute dental jobs are of high quality. Patients have more treatment options especially when they need to replace their teeth. There is nothing better than getting dental implants if you wish to replace missing tooth or teeth because they are long lasting and, if maintained well, will last you a lifetime.

Here is a quick glance at the procedure involved in getting dental implants:

  • A detailed examination of the patient’s dental and medical health along with a bone density assessment and test for sinuses is performed.
  • Before the implants are loaded the area of the missing tooth is prepared for the treatment. The quality and health of the surrounding gums are also determined.
  • Titanium screw is placed and the area is left to heal for at least two or three months. However, there are other procedures in dental implants where the healing process is omitted and the cap is placed on the same day.
  • The implant is surgically exposed, and then a healing cap placed over it.
  • Our experts take impressions that are sent to the laboratory. The impressions are used to make a dental crown. The crown is made to look like your original set of teeth, even the color is matched carefully.
  • After two weeks, the healing cap is removed, and the dental crown is placed over it.
  • Since the dental implants are biocompatible they merge with the surrounding bone and function exactly like the root of a tooth.

The oral health doctors of our clinic understand that a patient is usually under stress or anxiety about having to go through this process. This is why they explain the procedure beforehand. All our oral health practitioners are compassionate and kind. If they find you feeling anxious about the treatment, they ensure that they make you comfortable before they take you through the treatment.

Healthy Smiles provides durable dental implants which can cost on an average between $4,000 and $7,000. The bill varies for every patient and would depend on the number of implants, type of implant used, extraction, usage of dentures or dental bridge, charges of the prosthodontist or oral surgeon, etc. To ease out your tension of having to pay a huge bill, we also offer some dental payment plans so you can pay the bill in instalments. Our dental implant experts will give you a rough estimate of the expenditure that you would incur before you can begin the treatment.

At Healthy Smiles, a general dentist will take you through a consultation process. The treatment will be done by our highly skilled dentist, who are experts in providing high quality dental implants.
